Is a functional resume a red flag?

I have a career gap (1 year break, 3 years long covid) and for the first time, I didn’t know how to write my resume with confidence. I spoke to a professional about it and she recommended a functional resume. I took her advice but I’m wary. Does it look suspect or do employers usually skip over these? If I write a chronological resume, there’s a gaping hole of time missing. What’s the better move?
