STEM phd student to finance, is possible?

I’m a 28 yo mechanical engineer and I’m currently doing a phd (starting my last year) on material science (mainly lab, testing new materials for automotive sector, but developing few coding skills). The phd is not going so well and I’m getting tired about lab life. During these 2 years, I also became disillusioned about academic life. I’m thinking about quitting it for my mental health everyday. Some of my friends are working in companies, but I notice that they tend to do repetitive tasks (sometimes they do tasks that a technician usually does) and even not well paid (after all the blood and tears spent on that degree). At the same time, I’m getting more and more interested in finance and I don’t know if my background can be useful for this sector. Do you think it is possible to switch my career from a so technical sector like my degree to finance? Do you think age would be a problem? In fact, I’m also thinking about a quantitative finance degree where i can shift my engineering skills to finance (I am thinking about analyst roles or where maths is involved). Do you think a quantitative finance degree can help for this transition or a MBA is required?
Any advice will be extremely helpful, thanks

PS: I’m from Europe doing a phd in europe
