Are there alternatives to references ?

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all doing well.
I have been let go from my job. I should have seen it coming as many signs pointed in that direction. However, he told me he was letting me go two days before the end of my probationary period (how convenient !) so that I would have a two-days notice. I was there for more than 90 days.
The thing is, I need to put this job on my resume as this is the third longest job I’ve had in this field (and the most recent) which serves as proof of my experience. But I don’t know what to do if potential employers ask for references.
My former boss told me I could give his name and number for references but when I asked him if we could agree on a story so as to not say I was let go and that he ended my probationary period, he was hesitant. I know many will tell me that I cannot ask my boss to lie for me and this may be wrong but you need to understand that I need to rebound from this and do my best to find another job.
However, he is very shady and I don’t trust him so I don’t think I can put him as a referee.
Are there alternatives to references ? Is there something I can say in order to not have to put him as a referee ?

Thanks.
