How do I start a career in engineering with no relevant qualifications?

Hello all.

I (29m), have been working since I was 16, starting in general retail and then becoming a bicycle mechanic for some years. After that I have moved country and have been working in a bar in a ski resort ever since. Recently I have been wanting a complete change in my career.

I’ve always had a very keen interest in how things work and fixing them, the bicycle mechanic job was pretty great, but I have been exploring options in mechanical engineering or something similar to get started in, but I’m struggling to figure out how to get started. Its possible I will be moving back to the UK after this winter to start this journey and have been looking at degrees with foundation year, HNC/HND and apprenticeship options.

I’m asking for advice on anyone that has done these routes, especially doing so with no relevant qualifications, and how difficult it was to get into the industry? If any of these routes are better for an older than average starter? It’s important to note I will still need to support myself once moved back to the UK. Also if there is any way to start studying relevant maths/physics topics that might get me a foot in the door?

I do have plenty of experience working with cars and engines and a big interest in them, not sure how that would translate over to potential employers/colleges or universities. Also 3 A-Levels, although not relevant to engineering.

All in all, I’m just asking for advice on how to get myself in the best possible position to succeed.
