Is it okay to negotiate salary after verbally agreeing to an offer over the phone?

Last week I was caught off guard while on campus by a call from an engineering firm I’d interviewed with. The call was fairly straight forward, I was given a brief overview of the salary and benefits and was then asked if I accept the offer. At this point my heart was pounding, and I wasn’t clued in on what the exact implications of saying yes or no were. I hesitated for a while but eventually said yes.

Ive since talked about this with my friend who’s knowledgeable about career stuff. He knows that I have another offer with considerably higher compensation, but that I’d much rather work at the firm with the lower offer. He advised me to call back and attempt to renegotiate. Especially since the lower offer is on the low end of what most in the position make.

Do you think I should attempt to renegotiate? Im extremely anxious about the thought of calling back, but a positive outcome would be amazing. Most of what I can find on google however advises against this. But I value my friend’s advice a good bit, just trying to get some more input…

Edit/Update: I have signed the offer without renegotiating.

The pay and benefits are still far above liveable as a 23 year old, and as one of you said I have my entire career to improve on this front. I’ll be working for a company that I really like, and want to start off on the right foot. I’ll use this as a learning experience, and I’m sure I’ll be able to do nothing more than laugh about this in the future. Good luck to you all and thank you.
