How do I manage taking over work from coworker whose position was three levels above mine?

Title, coworker is leaving in less than two months, this fact was of course dropped on me less than two weeks before my professional exam.

The guy just had a baby, which is why I’m worried. They’re doing some internal restructuring and filling some senior positions and letting more junior roles’ contracts run out. I am honestly really scared as I have two years left on my trainee contract and have no idea what this means for me.

What is this for me exactly. There was no talk of a pay rise or a promotion. No talk of hiring other people. Can I use this as a bargaining chip to negotiate a salary increase or should I just bite the bullet and look for a new job?
