Seeking advice about the IT field?

I started working with my states workforce development program recently. During my meeting there I was told that IT would probably be a great field for me to get into. Googles, IT Support Certification Program, was also recommended as a place to start. The thing is, I don’t know what IT is outside of computers and networks. I’m also skeptical that a certificate from Google would actually be of any value. What I’m trying to ask here is

1. What is IT other than fixing peoples PCs and setting up networks?
2. Is Googles certification program something I should pursue?
3. What does it take to break into the field?
4. What would it take to be successful in IT?

I’m asking about this on Reddit to avoid the vague answers searching on google provided, and to hopefully hear from people in the field.
