Should I pick up the slack?

Sometimes at work, whenever my colleagues ask me for help, I rush to do what is necessary. Sometimes what I do is useful; sometimes, my efforts go a little sideways – I miss the mistakes others have made. The issue is that people immediately question my contribution, and that falls onto me. I feel disheartened and think I’m doing something wrong by trying to help and be useful – any advice on how I should go about it?
