Help picking a major?

I’m 18 years old turning 19 in the next couple of weeks. I’m from a small island in the Caribbean, and tbh long story short I want out. I’ve been through some hellish times here and I don’t feel like I belong. I want out. I feel trapped and depressed.. I’m ready to start my life.

I want to leave to study abroad in either the US or Canada. I don’t have that much parental support and my home country is broke af so I won’t have much scholarship funds either. Realistically, most of my expenses to study abroad will have to be covered by loans. I do plan to take a year to work btw and save some funds.

I’ve done my research and found a few affordable schools however I’m worried about picking the wrong major.

I’ve been into STEM since I started high school and wanted to go into astronomy.. but after research, I realized that I won’t be making much money after graduating with a bachelors. I learned that I’d need to go for my masters and phd to actually make decent money.

With the debt that I’ll be going into, it wouldn’t be a wise financial decision for me. I’m looking for a degree in STEM that would allow me to make decent money after graduating, as my goal is to seek permanent residency and create a life for myself after graduating.

I also want financial freedom. I do not want to be sitting at a desk for most of my day. I don’t want to be miserable. I want to be able to live freely and travel and enjoy life.

Being from the Caribbean, I realized many people wanted to move here to work remotely.. I mean I do fucking hate it here but I can always move to another island. This lead me to look into high paying remote jobs.. or any career path that allows me the freedom to work remotely. I actually really really wanna be able to work remotely.

I’ve heard people say that there’s more to life than an office job. There’s much more to do. What career path would lead me to that kind of freedom?

I’ve been looking into engineering.. specially chemical engineering. I’ve also realized that I could go into consulting or start my own firm or whatever in the future.

And btw I forgot to mention I’m not a computer science person.. well.. tbh I don’t know. I’ve never looked into comp sci deeply but by the looks of it, I don’t think I’d enjoy the career.

Ideally I wanna pursue a stem degree that will make me good money after graduating that’s in demand. In the future, I’d want to pursue my masters in a pure science like astronomy or chemistry. I’ve always wanted to be a scientist making cool things/ discoveries that will actually help people.

Ik my thoughts are kinda all over the place but can you guys maybe suggest some majors/career paths?
