Seeking Advice: Pursuing a Bachelor’s in Business Analytics or Certificates for Career Growth?

Hi everyone,

I’m at a crossroads in my career and could really use some guidance. I graduated in 2016 with a one year course Diploma in Business majoring in Project Management (Level 7 from New Zealand), and I’m currently working in the data field, though not as a data analyst or in business intelligence. I’m considering two options to advance my career: applying for a Bachelor’s degree in Business specialized in Analytics and pursuing paper recognition for my diploma qualifications, or opting for certificates to enhance my skills such as PL-300.

A bit about my background: I’m in my mid-30s, earning a decent salary for NZ standards, and I have a mortgage to consider. Lately, I’ve been feeling a bit down about where I am professionally, wondering if I could be doing better. Despite already being in the field, my goal is to immerse myself in the business intelligence (developing and database admin) field and aim for a 100k plus salary, even though I have only basic knowledge of the industry and its main tools (SQL, Excel, and Power BI). Another benefit I’m considering in obtaining a bachelor’s in business is the possibility of working in other industries in the future, because of the weight a bachelor’s degree carries, especially since I’m currently in the utilities sector, and as an investment to secure a more promising future for myself with a higher qualification.

So, here’s the big question: Is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Analytics worth the investment, or should I focus on obtaining certificates to bolster my skillset? While this is the first place I’m seeking advice, I’m also considering talking to a career coach. I want to ensure I make a well-informed decision that aligns with my career aspirations and financial responsibilities.

Thanks in advance for your time and help.
