I’m a 22 year old male that studying to be a nurse because of my Asian parents. I do not know if this is the right career for me. Is there any alternative careers that have similar benefits like nursing?

So as the title suggests, I’m studying to be a nurse because of my Asian parents (who also happen to be nurses.) In fact, I actually failed within the first year of a nursing program at my previous uni. I am now in a different uni with an accelerated program and recently I managed to passed a nursing class with sheer luck.

The farther I go into the program, the more I’m starting to doubt whether or not nursing is for me. I’m not doing clinicals or labs (yet) and I am aware that nursing is a flexible job with different career options but there are a few things that concerns me when I go into the field.

The obvious being that I have to take care of people, give the right medicine, and of course, make sure the patients are alive. As well as look at other nasty things like blood, piss, etc. But making sure people stay alive is my biggest concern. There’s also the fact you have to work 12 hours a day/night, 3x a week. I have read in my own nursing textbook as well as different sources from the internet that medical errors do happen and this is in partly because nurses work 12 hours a shift and get only 15-30 minutes of break and they are standing most of the time.

And while yes there are other nursing positions out there that don’t do bedside or have to interact with patients… you still need to work on the floor for at least 1 – 2 years and I’m not entirely sure how I feel about that before heading on to a different nursing position.

Anyways, with all this said, does anyone happen to know of alternative careers that have similar benefits or qualities to nursing? The only good thing I see with nursing is you work 3x a week, flexible options, and financial benefits. But mostly the schedule and financial benefits is what attracts me.

Appreciate it.

TLDR: Concerned about working as a nurse because of it’s work conditions, want to know if there’s an alternative career besides nursing with similar benefits.
